Harvest Moon

Quilt Designer: Lila Scott
American Patchwork and Quilting October 2006

This quilt is a good example of the way Lila uses a traditional block with contemporary fabrics. Here, Lila used bright novelty fabrics with a Halloween theme. Although the overall colors are black and orange, several blocks feature small amounts of white and purple. “Those highlights of color pull your eye along and keep it moving across the quilt,” she says. Because the individual pinwheel blocks are so busy, Lila chose a muted orange and yellow fabric for sashing, as well as a dark border with a small print. Both fabrics provide a stopping point for the eye and neither competes with the many prints in the pinwheels. Lila used repetition of the border fabric in the small sashing squares to create a calming element. For Harvest Moon, as for most of her quilts, Lila didn’t choose sashing and border fabrics until her center blocks were sewn.
