Choosing a Backing

Dear Darlene,
I am making the yellow quilt kit featured on your Web site. I can't wait to finish!! The yellow is a great color. I have also made the green one and I have the blue kit featured in the Feb. 2007 issue of American Patchwork and Quilting.  In none of the photos does it show what you use as a backing. Do you use the solid color or do you use some of your feedsack fabric? Just curious, because sometimes I spend a lot of time picking just the right one.

You make wonderful quilts! It is especially great that you share your authentic feed sack fabric.
Linda Orizondo

Hi Linda,
Thanks for the nice compliments! Yes, I usually use vintage feed sack fabric for the backing on my feed sack quilts. It seems appropriate, and if I choose feed sacks with a rather loose weave, the quilt is wonderful to hand-quilt. However, if you can’t find two or more feed sacks to make a backing, you could also use reproduction 1930s fabric or, in March of this year, I will have a new line of “Mama’s Feed sacks” available. Those fabrics will be reproductions of vintage feed sacks and would be appropriate to use as backings.
Darlene
