Washing Feedsacks

Dear Darlene,
I bought a box of feedsacks at a sale for 50 cents, but they are quite dusty and dirty. Is it safe for me to wash them before I put them into a quilt?
Kay Jacobsen, NE

Hi Kay,
Boy, did you get lucky! Definitely wash them. I'd recommend washing, then soaking in Oxiclean solution for a day or two, drain the water, then wash again with a little bleach in the water. You'll be surprised at how much brighter the colors will be after washing. MOST of the feedsacks are quite colorfast; occasionally I have trouble with lavender, red, or navy blue fading, but you will like them so much better when they're clean.
Darlene
